Dear Marianne,

Here are ten things I didn’t know when I stepped your age (or haven’t acknowledged yet when I was 18) so I hope this will give you good guidelines in life:

First, be happy today and always.
Second, don’t settle for what ifs. Always think of this: will you look back on life and say “I wish I had” or “I’m glad I did?”
Third, make the right mistakes.
Fourth, pain may take a long time, but it will and it can, go away. What stays permanently is indifference. So forgive, forgive, forgive!
Fifth, dream big!
Sixth, always fill your bottle of hope.
Seventh, keep the faith.
Eighth, understanding will take you a looooooong, long way.
Ninth, eat wisdom, not loss.
Tenth, words are golden.
Eleventh, break the rules.

Happy birthday!

Your cousin Shayne
